Discover the delights of Eindhoven at Christmas and Stratumseind the longest Pub Street in the Netherlands
Between 1993 and 1999, when Dynamo Open Air was at its peak we used to bring between 750 to 1,000 Metal fans to Eindhoven each year in May. After one or two years, an increasing number came back, not for the Festival itself, but for a weekend in one of Holland’s liveliest Cities. Unbelievably, once voted the most boring town in the Netherlands, Eindhoven today is anything but boring.
Boasting the longest pub street in the country with over 50 bars and clubs, Eindhoven basically has everything that Amsterdam has to offer, but in a fraction of the space. What’s more everything one needs is within crawling distance of our hotel.
Eindhoven retains the day to day bustle of an important business and cultural centre during the week, only to throw off the shackles at weekend to (as Frank Gallogoh would say) Party!! The warm and friendly Market Square is the heart of the city. Patios line two sides of the square making it an ideal spot for people watching.
The patios are comfortable all year long, blankets and heaters make it a great place during the winter, and of course at Christmas during the “Winterstadt” festival there is much more going on. Meanwhile along Stratumseind the music and activity throbs on until 4.00 am.
Eindhoven isn’t just about about nightlife (although it does have a top class Casino on the Square). With the covered shopping centre ‘De Heuvel Galerie‘, Piazza Centre, large department stores including the exclusive ‘De Bijenkorf‘ and an extensive selection of boutiques and specialist shops, the centre of Eindhoven is the most bustling shopping centre in the South of the Netherlands.
Brussels Christmas Market and Winter Wonders
On our way back to Calais on Sunday 16th December for the homeward journey, we will stop off in Brussels to check out the internationally renowned Brussels Christmas Market in the centre of the city. Stretching from Grand Place to Place Sainte-Catherine, the attractions include some 240 wooden Christmas chalets lining the streets of Bourse, Marché aux Poissons and Place St. Catherines. These stalls look like gingerbread houses, twinkling with fairy lights and covered with ‘snow-top’ roofs. The chalets sell a variety of Christmas items, decorations, special gifts and seasonal food and drink (including the obligatory and traditional mulled wine!). Other attractions include a huge skating rink, Big (Ferris) Wheel and ice sculptures including a 40 feet Ice Monster.
